Smoke-Rated and Fire-Rated Doors
2.1 Standard specifications
Basic standards
Locking parts can be approved for use in fire-rated and/or smoke-rated doors on the basis of various
standards. In Germany, these are the following:
EN 12209* European standard for mortise and deadbolt locks
EN 179*
EN 1125*
European standards for escape door locks
The “Ü” symbol on the face plate indicates that a product is suitable for fire protection
applications.
DIN 18250 National standard for locks and multi-point locks; tested products receive a “Ü”
symbol.
DIN 4102-5
DIN 4102-18
National standard for building products that are otherwise not regulated; a general
approval from the building authorities leads to a “Ü” symbol.
* For the EN standards, proof of a successful test in accordance with EN 1634-1 must be presented to the notified body in
order to demonstrate suitability for fire protection applications. The fire test must have been conducted from both sides of
the door element.
In all of the standards, it is crucial that a locking part be “self-locking” with continuous functional capability
in order to be approved. The locking part must also have “the capability to keep the door in the
locked position and not contribute to the spreading of the fire”.
IMPORTANT!
In Germany, locking parts for smoke and fire protection must have both the Ü mark (approval mark of
the certification centre) and the CE mark.
